Whether you are a first-time visitor or would like to expand your horizon on things to see and do in the Phoenix area, this 4-hour trip is an ideal choice. Let us show you some of the highlights in and around Arizona´s capitol!
Delve into Arizona´s history at the State Capitol: The historic building was erected in 1898 as an impressive marker of the territory´s readiness for statehood – even though it wasn’t until 1912 that Arizona became a state, the last in the union of the original 48. Check out Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and hotspot for Arizona´s baseball fans. Chase Field is also a landmark of architectural engineering, as it is the first sports stadium in the United States with a retractable roof – a blessing for baseball players and fans alike in Arizona´s mild winters and hot summers.
Enjoy two of the most popular recreation areas in the Phoenix metro area: Camelback Mountain, named for its signature hump and a favorite of outdoor enthusiasts and fitness fans; and South Mountain Park, offering breathtaking views over the Phoenix metro area – including the White Mountains to the east and, on a clear day, the San Francisco peaks, Arizona´s highest mountain, 140 miles to the north.
Explore the city´s university quarter, Tempe, which is home to Arizona State University and a multitude of bookstores, cafés as well as unique Tempe Town Lake. The artificial lake was constructed in a dry portion of the Salt River bed and was opened to the public in 1999. It hosts the swimming event of the Arizona Triathlon and several regattas for rowing, sailing and kayaking.
Shop the Scottsdale arts district – a picturesque quarter which was once described by the New York Times as “a desert version of Miami´s South Beach”. 125 art galleries and studios have made Scottsdale a center for the arts and one of the country´s largest arts markets. Old Town Scottsdale also features numerous high-end shops and boutiques – take some time to browse this lovely southwestern village!
